How are we going to pay? Easy ... milk, fruit, any produce, gold, coal, green hydrogen (maybe at some stage), tourism (services), education (services), entertainment (services). We do have enough money, the question is just how we decide to spend it - and whether we prefer to spend some more of it on defence, or whether we prefer the Chinese to take it instead as tribute. China has a (really) long history of receiving tributes from states which they in return didn't attack. So, yes the money is here and we do have the choice whether we want to put it in defence or (instead) pay a tribute to China.

End of democracy? - Not sure. I am pretty certain that this specific method of picking a government will hang around, and as usual in history, some states will subscribe to it and others won't. Maybe the US will move in the "won't" camp, but some people might ask, whether they ever have been in the democratic camp anyway. Their election system gives people based on where they live more or less influence over the elected government - which is obviously highly undemocratic.

End of American Democracy? Possible, but in my view not certain. The system does have some resistance ...

Civil war in the US? Quite possible if things go wrong. I can't really imagine that e.g. countries like California or New York would be prepared to put up for long with a fascistic authoritarian in the white house breaking the rules.

the country is not broke  but its productivity is not great ...

i would not rule out the performance of the scandi's ...

just looks at the performance of the NZX ...

Isn't the Swedish government dependant on the support of far right populists? Not sure I'd see that as the future of democracy.

Fair enough - we do have our very own right wing populists manipulating our government. They work hard to improve the killing potential for our population by making access to firearms and tobacco easier and cheaper. But still - for some reason I think they are less concerning than the so called "Sweden Democrats" (but the concern is obviously in the eye of the beholder), and they have a lower voter percentage as well (even if you add ACT and NZ First as right wing populists together).
