I guess its always easy to complain about the coward politicians of the west who need to look for being re-elected.

On the other side - Putin does not have this problem (i.e. he does not need to care about public opinion), and given that he lost the war already he is behaving like a cornered rat.

Sure - the rat will eventually go down, but his bite still might be poisonous. If only one of his nuclear missiles makes it to one major western city ... what impact do you think this will have on the electability of the politicians who triggered his wrath?

So, I guess democracy is in that regard weak and slow, but this might be a weakness we better learn to accept given that the alternative is worse: More rats like Putin (and Xi, and the dear leader, and the Saudi butcher, and the Iranian unholy leader) running the worlds affairs.

We have already enough vermin in leadership positions, no need to ask for more of them.

In Ukraine Russia has jammed GPS along nearly all the 1,200km front, rendering the US-donated Himar launchers and the Excalibur precision shells far less accurate than they should be. The Ukrainians have sometimes gone weeks without hitting a target due to Russian jamming, according to recent reports.

Quite amazing how Putin managed to get the West to pull together and revitalise the Western arms production.

Given that all the world used to think he is a great strategist am I sort of wondering, what really motivated him to achieve a significant strengthening and expansion of NATO and to help the Western arms production to get on the backfoot again?

Six weeks into Ukraine's counteroffensive to reclaim its eastern and southern regions from Russian occupiers, no military obstacle appears as daunting as Russia's vast and dense minefields, which are destroying Nato-supplied armour, wounding soldiers and zapping morale.

"We can push with 10 brigades but it won't work because the mines are everywhere, every half a meter there are mines," said Sultan, a commander in the 78th regiment, a special forces unit, at a field hospital near the front line in Zaporizhzhia region. "They are everywhere."

"These are real people in real machines that are out there really clearing real minefields and they're really dying," General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said on Tuesday

Ukraine's advance has been painfully slow, and frontline soldiers in southern Zaporizhzhia region and eastern Donetsk region largely blame Russia's minefields — a hidden threat that has become a psychological torment.

To recapture territory, troops must cross miles of open fields littered with thousands of mines: anti-tank, anti-personnel, improvised explosive devices and an array of booby traps.

Some are launched at random into fields from afar, so-called "distance mining"; others bounce in the air when triggered to spray shrapnel as far as possible. Small green plastic ones that soldiers call "butterfly" mines, a reference to their double-winged shape, are hard to de-mine and especially menacing, troops and doctors said.

Mine strikes have put many vehicles out of commission, halting advances, and leaving the troops to trek on foot through minefields while under fire. etc..etc..etc..

Not much fun being on the Ukrainian front line...
