Lets see ... Russias GDP was in 2023 something like USD 2b. They invest 7% of that into gear and staff to attack their neighbours (I wouldn't call it defence) - which is USD 140m.

The EU spent already in 2023 Eur 326m (USD 370m) for defence, and this was 1.9% of their GDP. This sum doesn't yet include the UK.

Not sure any of these countries needs to invest more into defence than say 2 ... 2.5% of GDP, if they stop playing games, give the -populists the boot and are determined to work together as a team against the agressor Russia.

NZ obviously is different (we are not part of any union and can't rely anymore on the US), but I recon if we manange to efectively work together with Australia, we probably could stay as well far below 5% defence spending. Just put a bit more brain and throw less money at the problem.

I could well imagine us in a defence system with say Australia and Singapore (currently at 3%  of GDP) ... 

The problem isn't solved by dreaming up huge numbers, but by investing some brain in efficently using the money we can afford to spend. I agree however, it must be more than the pittance NZ invests currently into defence.

Actually - rare earths are not rare at all. Plenty of places around the globe where they could be mined: Ukraine, Greenland, US, Vietnam, Russia, Brasil, Australia, India, Canada to name just the largest (known) deposits. The only reason that China has currently a monopoly on them is that they undercut the other (potential) producers by that much, that it wasn't economical to mine them anywhere else. And yes, opening a new rare earth mine takes at least 4 ... 5 years.

So, yes, US was as stupid relying on cheap Chinese rare earths as Europe was relying on cheap Russian gas. Looks like Chump isn't such a genius after all.
