Yes, I wondered that as well. But given that Russian propaganda obviously never lies, maybe it was the Russians who killed their own people and set the fire after shooting down the drone?

Ok now what if the US still had a fleet of F14s they could deploy to Ukraine.

Would the old F14's still be able to fly fast and deliver a knock out blow... well according to the top speeds the F14 was seriously quick. First testing models with the older engine variants flew at over mach 2.5.

The upgraded models that should have been developed but was replaced by the F18 would have been expensive. But the Hill new best and like the SR71 (actually not its proper name) it was canned. But it was so effective they put them all in the yard and were concerned that other country's not get hold of the aging beast...

As everyone knows the f18 had a high angle of attack.

Also note that in some model of the F14 wings are usually controlled by the computer (based on the current altitude and the airspeed) automatically and it is already available since the F-14A. So when Maverick splits the throttle, it is possible that the computer decides the wing should probably stay swept back.

also keeping the wings swept back would not alert the SU's of his intensions and doesnt leak energy.

What about those top gun scenes well Cruise can fly but maybe someone got the scenes all wrong...

The F14 it using the later engine variants could only be caught by an SU by firing a missile cause it cant outrun an f14 in expert hands with wings fully swept back position...

Maybe you flight pilots out there would want the new f14 that wasnt ever put into production cuase lets face it; the F14 is the meanst looking fighter ever built and would have just got meaner...

The US always get ride of its best aircraft before they fully develop them.

All in all the f14 Tomcat if developed farther could have become a serious as platform adding another dimension to US air combat power. Even today the new versions not in production would be the plane to hand to the UKE's instead of the f15...
