Market Close report -

Across the Tasman, the S&P/ASX 200 Index had risen 1.55% to 8192.4 points at 6pm NZ time, no doubt exhilarated by the A$3.4 billion (NZ$3.76b) purchase of Foxtel by the London-based sports streaming platform DAZN.

Previous owners News Corp and Telstra will take stakes of 6% and 3% respectively in DAZN, with shareholder loans to Foxtel of A$578m being repaid.

Paul Robertshawe, chief investment officer with Octagon Asset Management, said the purchase implied that Sky TV "is pretty cheap and it may prompt talk about someone wanting to buy Sky".

Sky TV, up 8c or 3% to $2.75, has a content-sharing agreement with Foxtel.

Well, it was only a year ago that the SKY Board walked away from negotiations with an undisclosed private equity buyer who (it was rumoured) was offering $3.70 per share - from memory a 50% premium on the price at that time. We know negotiations were taking place but the Board didn't make anything public and shareholders are still none the wiser as to what the offer was.
Sky Boards, old and new, are notorious for putting their interests above shareholders, so I wouldn't hold your breath about a successful takeover anytime soon.

This part took me straight back to my misspent Covid days, tuning to the Sky TV channel for the Ogg & MistaTea show. Wonder where they are now - so quiet around these parts.

QuoteRemember what I said about how Spark couldn't make it work? It begs the question – what do DAZN think they can do with even less of a brand presence and no subscriber base in New Zealand? The obvious move would be to buy Sky outright, even at a premium Sky would be a bargain compared to Foxtel. Perhaps they are more Machiavellian than that - DAZN could just outbid Sky on the rights and then after the inevitable crumbling of Sky's share price, try and pick it up at a lower price. The risk trade-off is you have an operational lag between acquiring the rights and Sky's assts which sees you unable to fulfil your contract rights – or monetise those rights.

Agree bulltrap. Those two were very entertaining and very knowledgeable. Maybe they work for Dazn these days 😉

Craigs say

An article yesterday indicated that Sky and NZ Rugby have effectively reached an agreement for the National Provincial Championship (NPC) broadcast rights, with Sky and TVNZ set to share NZ rights. Sky is still in negotiations for the broadcast rights to (i) the All Blacks, (ii) other national teams, (iii) Super Rugby, and (iv) the NPC. With Super Rugby set to kick off in February 2026 and given our estimate that transitioning the filming/broadcasting/marketing of rugby from Sky to a new partner would take c.6 months, we believe NZ Rugby will need to finalise broadcast rights negotiations by September this year. As a reminder, we assume that Sky will secure the rights for $90m per year ($20m less than last cycle) which sets the firm up to pay a sustainable 30+cps dividend from FY26+, an 11% net yield at last close off $2.82.

Shareguy

Over $3. Confirmation of retaining the rugby to be announced soon.

30cps divi forecast. A lot to like.

Discovery paid $20M for it in 2021.  What a disaster.
Don't drink and buy shares in a downtrend, you bloody idiot.
