Quote from: KW on Dec 11, 2024, 04:19 PMThe only place people can afford to shop these days is Temu and Shein.
I don't think the hordes of Glassons customers would agree with that.
I still believe most people want to try clothes on to see if they fit properly and the fabric feel and style makes them feel good.

Goldman says 5 % increase in US discretionary spend next year ....

well it appears some parts of the world are still pumping... what went wrong in NZ...

is the economy really in need of a LOT more stimulus...

To stimulate or not to stimulate MORE, that is the question.

Retail = RISK.

This country's economy performance and increasing government debt which the current FM wants sweep under the media black out blanket is a warning that the ground under the beehive is shifting as the seismic monitors quiver...with the increasing weight of debt...

If retail stocks in NZ are moving UP UP UP and AWAY beware that this balloon is cyclical and AUSSI dollar denominated stocks and its economic performance is the major force that could move the SP's.

might as well become a state of AUSSI... its TINA...

All looking good waltz

The Westpac McDermott Miller Consumer Confidence Index rose 7 points in December to 97.5. While still a little below long run averages, that is the most upbeat households have been since 2021.

Maybe winner(>=1) the household books are in better shape than the governments and the blow out transfer of money from government to household back in 2020...

and households have done a good job of balancing the cash book?

Interesting ... the article says "people thing". In my time people still used to "think", but maybe this consonant shift explains some of the issues humanity seems to have these days.

well 1963 in the baltics was a good year ... simula was created ...

we are entering the virtual age. it will take a while since getting AI to generate images is very random and a PITA....

real world retail is a lot easier and more fun.. actual real world shopping may combine the two ... you select some stuff in virtual and you also do the real world thing when you want to GET out get some VD... Vitamin D..

"Xi sharpened his focus on bad habits in 2021, when a regulatory crackdown on internet-platform companies targeted not only Chinese entrepreneurs like Alibaba's Jack Ma but also the so-called lifestyle excesses associated with video games, online music, celebrity fan culture, and private tutoring. Such state-directed social engineering suggests that the Chinese authorities have little tolerance for the sense of possibility and optimism embedded in the DNA of Western consumer societies."

and this is why retail in the west is a lower RISK than in those other Utopian states..

the little red book might soon out sell designer jeans... know which runway fashion event you would sooner attend.

and that is why Retail in the west will always win out be it Junkie old cars (still better than you get in russia) or designer jeans and bling...

its yet to see if china EV's can last or are cheap junk.. cheap is often as cheap is..

So easy to get fooled by ones memories ... and past memories often develop a silver halo.

Nevertheless - yes, I do remember one amazing Swedish summer with long and hot days and amazing flavors of soft ice cream in Stockholm (best soft ice I ever had ...) :). I think it was 1979;

However - I remember as well at least too miserable Swedish summers in the 1980íes with lots of rain, temperatures hardly moving into double digits, freezing winds and the only way to warm up was switching on the hotel sauna.

2 out of three Nordic summers bad ... based on these odds I prefer the summers here (even if they are not perfect either).

This is off topic of course... firstly biking in NZ in summer requires being coated in sun block... retail chemist and supermarket sales go through the roof...

even the KANGS rowers flee for home and cant believe the burn rate...

secondly the number of lakes for testing on up in the north are numerous and temps are perfect for fast conditions of hulls...

and my memories are only late 2019 ... october...

i was also in europe often from the 1982... and in the nordics the summers are now much warmer and still no radiation burn.. except from perhaps russian mishaps..

im sorry but testing in this country is almost impossible not to mention the verbals one gets from the local so called sports experts and the local club members...

its just not worth having to listen to....

This surely must be good for retail:

Clients hit their EFTPOS facilities so hard that ANZ can't cope with all the withdrawals:

 https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/anz-online-banking-outage-hits-a-day-out-from-christmas/MXKJKJEQUJHF7JHLDHAXR6YOSU/

Just wondering, why its only ANZ customers going on a spending spree? ANZ Internet banking is in practical terms down (well, unusable), while ASB works for me perfectly fine (well, as lousy as always).

Punters finally realised they've been sucked in the doom and gloom media and there hasn't been a long recession after all and the touted cost of living crisis didn't really affect that many
