Yes but we are far too woke for that. There is already a number of shops where the staff are in cages.

Retail sales tank in UK... but lets face it UK is a basket case at the moment...

"Partly due to wet weather, U.K. retail sales lost 1.2% in July, well below a consensus forecast of a 0.5% drop produced by a Reuters poll of economists, further dampening sentiment."

wet weather?  Its been wet down under for near on a year and have you noticed the Gardens?  All that moss growing everywhere...

Crime, theft in particular now so bad it influences headline earnings much worse than it used to be. Same here with Countdown taking additional 'action'. Headlines all over.
Eg.

Retailers blame theft for significant losses: How big is the problem?

For those of you running Security systems this is the next level. Getting those camera feeds and making them smarter. It certainly something we will be looking at over the next few years with what feeds we are running.

For long drives ways cones can be replaced by old fashioned border control installations if you need them. Swipe cards or remotes for the bars to lift up on the drive ways..

Once you have secured your business and home properties the effects you observe in people behaviours can be noticed. Hardened criminals of course arnt detoured by much ....

This reminded me of the movie 'Minority Report' back in the early 2000's.

But more local I can imagine retailers (the topic here) being interested in something like this.

Is China debt a threat to the consumer in NZ and to retail as it will also surely effect the Kangas as well...

I think it's clear TRA are weathering this downturn a lot better than most.  It will be very interesting to see the divisional performance of HLG later this month when they report.  I'm picking N.Z. operations have been extremely weak and Glassons Au continues to do okay.

On X yesterday from Luxon - makes you wonder how people can afford to buy anything.

Sat down for a 'Lux' hot chocolate at the Neighbourhood Cafe this morning to hear from Colin  Wordsworth that the Lower Hutt Community food bank is getting slammed - they've never seen the need so large. And it's mortgage holders who are coming in for food, it's folk who have good jobs but are getting snowed under by the cost of living.
