Quote from: KW on Dec 28, 2022, 12:19 PMMost of any increase in spend is probably just the effect of inflation.  Higher revenue doesnt equate to higher profits.

It will translate to a LOT higher profit for HLG, mark my words and watch and see on 17 February 2023.

KIWI dollar has worked back some magic as fore talked about by MR B and some commentators have forecast a stronger Kanga later next year.

HLG and MHJ will benefit from stronger currency next year and 17th march 2024 will be the big one to whatch...

Even Brisc and KMD will benefit from stronger currencies.

No one took any notice of eeyore (adrian) at xmas and hit the shops....

does this show how out of touch the GOVT and Reserve banks are with real life?

My experience doing my Christmas shopping was that the shops were very quiet.  Unlike prior years, I had no difficulty in getting a car park at the mall, the shops themselves were not busy, the shelves were fully stocked, and I didnt even have to queue to use the checkouts at places like The Warehouse.  I was quite surprised because normally the mall at Christmas is a mad house.  Was everyone online shopping?
Don't drink and buy shares in a downtrend, you bloody idiot.

That's a good question!  I just went and checked our situation.  We're a family of four under this roof but gifts were sent elsewhere too - and our collective present shopping but for one item was all done online.  The only other physical shopping was at the stupidmarket and even that felt less hideously busy than previous.  I do remember this well, as I pointed it out a few  times as we meandered the aisles until I finally got a punch in the arm. Dunno if that's representative (the online bit, not the shoulder punch) or not.

Brisc out here in the country MID Waka TOO  (waikato) had free parks mid afternoon for boxing day but shop assistants said the big rush was mid morning.

cretainly the stats when they come out will be interesting....

Notice that next week its RAIN again...

but it is LA weather rain season and that could dampen down holiday beach shopping when a lot of people will have gone to the beach after new year...

warehouse group had a shocker but HLG, KMD , BRISC have hopefully feared better as oil is still priced low with china still not ramping up but dropping like flys...

Dont expect europe to charge up for a few years.

Most interesting will be the fuel composites used to generated electricity in the US as high prices for electricity and fuel in the US could impact retail spending and that lag can impact world markets...

Some say DOW and SP has a way to go down yet... YIKES...

if the US and China get HIT hard no markets will be immune...

RetailWatch data for December month came out today

Would have to say the numbers are pretty gloomy looking - core sectors down v December 2021 and verall sales only up from travel and entertainment things. Even clothing was down

I did the old comparison to 2019 trick -- even then the % increases are pretty small when you think it's over 3 years

From SCIL announcement on Unlisted today. They are the owners of The Hub mall in Hornby Christchurch.

There has been the usual media discussion (negative) around retail trading patterns for the month of December
leading up to Christmas and many of these have centred around the rhetoric of an impending recessionary
downturn.
It is not my style to cherry pick only good news but I am sure it is a confidence booster to you to know that the
Mall experienced an 8.8% increase in tenancy retail turnover for December 2022 as compared to the previous
December with both anchors enjoying very positive increases. The Hub recorded its highest retail monthly
turnover with the exclusive GST total reaching a significant milestone figure.
