Big splurge of travel but will it last ?
Interesting article on what percentage of people intend never to travel again.

Not sure mate. Chart starting to look a bit weak, broken down through the 30 day moving average.  I think we need a one on one personal consultation with N.Z's leading momentum trader and as luck would have it...

Good point. KW, what do you say?

Poet

I see that AIR has now rescheduled 2000 flights for next year. They say 90% will leave within sixty minutes of original schedule (that's probably just about as good as flights that haven't been rescheduled).
But on a more serious note, they say that 10% of these flights, presumably international, have been rescheduled for a different date - no mention of compensation for the inconvenienced passengers (extra accommodation, food, ground transport, extra days off work, missed activity bookings etc). AIR seems to think they will get away with this but in reality they are on the hook for damages under the Civil Aviation Act up to $8800 per pax whether they like it or not.
So let's say the average cost to pax is $1500 and 10% of 2000 planes are affected, say 100 pax per plane, I think AIR is looking at some serious compensation - circa $30m. And the extra damage to reputation

Basil

Do people know their rights though Poet or do most of them simply make a claim on their travel insurance policy for the extra costs ?  (Not that I am defending AIR who are obviously price gouging at present and running their operation in whatever manner suits themselves best and to heck with the inconvenience and extra cost to passengers).

I'd imagine that travel insurance companies know the law and send claimants back to AIR. But I also imagine that many have higher excess on their travel insurance than their actual costs or don't have any insurance. Interestingly, it is actually a criminal offence under the Fair Trading Act Section 13 to:

"make a false or misleading representation concerning the existence, exclusion, or effect of any condition, warranty, guarantee, right, or remedy"

So if AIR tells a customer that they aren't entitled to compensation, then AIR is in breach of this provision

Yeah, some of this is beyond AIR's control but there is some A grade bullsh*t being pro offered too -

"Air New Zealand announced on December 22 that it had changed the flight times for almost 2000 international flights next year, leaving some scrambling to change connecting flights and accommodation.

The airline's chief customer and sales officer Leanne Geraghty said the changes were designed to "build flex and certainty into our network".

2000 international flight changes for 2023 made right at the arse end of 2022... in the name of flexibility and certainty?!  Weasel words.
