Don't know much about the new Sky Box, but I'm certainly not going to be paying for the privilege.

If it gets forced on me, then the Sky box will be gonnnneeeee.....!

Most people like it easy, Sky is easy to watch, how many will want to change and set up a new fangled App or something.

I suspect there will still be a "co-exclusive" deal to be had for sky.

I would be surprised if sky was cut out altogether at the next renewal.

If sky are paying around $100M a year that is a big chunk of cash to just turn down. You would need some pretty big kahunas to do that I think.

But maybe a deal where NZR+ can also stream the content. One snafu for sky could be if they only sell them satellite broadcasting rights (and not streaming).

That would be a body blow for SSN - a key growth area for sky.

NZR+ will provide the potential for NZR to reach their rugby fans directly on a global scale. Silver Lake are not silly so they will have a very clear vision for how they can maximise revenue going direct to consumers where it makes sense, keeping broadcast deals alive where it makes sense ...AND ON TERMS THAT MAKE SENSE.

The key thing is, imo, Sky have little control now. If they get any kind of deal they will need to count their lucky stars.

It was only very recently that sky managed to secure a deal with DAZN to continue broadcasting IPL.

chr*** only knows how much sky had to pony up, but they did get a deal done.

Which is why I would be surprised if sky didn't retain some sort of NZR deal when they negotiate in earnest next year.

Whether they are able to secure a 'good' deal (so far as SNT shareholders are concerned) is yet to be seen.

Sky must be absolutely ecstatic to have not been able to renew the deal on an exclusive basis.

As an aggregator, Sky doesn't need, or even want, exclusive deals for content except perhaps for sport. It just need access to the widest range of content available and to market itself as the only one-stop-shop in town. Co-exclusivity doesn't jeopardise that model.

But HBO has been the jewel in the crown for sky's entertainment offering for years. It would be better for sky if they could renew exclusively at a reasonable price.

As you concede, sport is the exclusive (for now) hook that reels in the punters. So, as long as SKY then gives those punters additional access to a wide range of content - including HBO - who really cares whether it is exclusive or not? Not me. I'm not going to dump SKY - and lose sport, news etc- and join say, Netflix or Disney. They are not interchangeable. Personally I like the aggregator model. I don't want to have to join three or four streaming companies (at the same cost of SKY) and lose access to news and sports. Which is why I still have SKY shares and why those who lost faith in that model bailed.
