Kiwi retailers are bracing for a "significant and sustained downturn" as the Middle East conflict fuels greater pessimism in the sector, new data show.

Higher fuel costs over March have added to inflationary pressures, squeezing retailers' margins and consumers' budgets.

Retail NZ's quarterly Retail Radar report, covering the first three months of the year, revealed 66% of respondents believe they will not meet their sales targets in the June quarter, the highest level recorded since the second quarter of 2024.

Almost a third of respondents (29%) said the survival of their business in the next 12 months "could go either way" – the highest in more than two years.

To combat rising fuel costs, more than half (53%) of retailers said they plan to put their prices up.

In this morning's The Press was a list of Lincoln University graduates.
Worrying [to me] is the lack of NZ names in the list.
I guess over 95% of graduates are not New Zealanders.
Would appear to me they are either Chinese or Indian

Think you might find a lot of those with chinese or Indian names are actually New Zealanders.

Agree.

What exactly would be a New Zealand surname anyway? We (or our forebears) come from different parts of the world - and so far there is no rule that people have to change their family name to become New Zealanders. Every name could be New Zealand.

Given the population growth it looks like in 20 years there will be more Kiwis around with Asian background rather than European. We better get used to accept Asian, Australian, African and American names as NZ as well.
