Kiwi retailers are bracing for a "significant and sustained downturn" as the Middle East conflict fuels greater pessimism in the sector, new data show.

Higher fuel costs over March have added to inflationary pressures, squeezing retailers' margins and consumers' budgets.

Retail NZ's quarterly Retail Radar report, covering the first three months of the year, revealed 66% of respondents believe they will not meet their sales targets in the June quarter, the highest level recorded since the second quarter of 2024.

Almost a third of respondents (29%) said the survival of their business in the next 12 months "could go either way" – the highest in more than two years.

To combat rising fuel costs, more than half (53%) of retailers said they plan to put their prices up.
