Quote from: snapiti on Oct 15, 2026, 07:08 PMIMO you maybe off the mark with no potential change in interest deductibility for commercial as well. Lets not forget a combination of Labour greens Opportunity, Maori is super keen on robbing the rich to pay the poor. Furthermore the right block IMO have thoroughly underestimated how large a portion of the population have been doing it real tough, this will show at the polls.
IMO in this case your opinion is worth squat.

You are castastrophizing re the left winning. Very few, if any commercial developments would happen if interest was not deductible. Stopping interest deductibility on commercial developments would not happen so it is one thing you can stop worrying about at night. I am sure there are some real issues that you could be concerned about.

That said there is no depreciation on commercial property but I guess this gets claimed when buildings are repaired. National reintroduced this policy denying a depreciation claim, so I guess it is sensible policy rather than government theft.

The lack of interest deductibility on residential property did not apply to new builds. It was designed to discourage rentiers buying up existing properties and doing f all to add to the nations growth except make housing expensive.

The new investment grant,  (20% immediate write-off for new assets including new commercial buildings) is highly likely to be abolished under a looney left coalition.

Yes Snapper me old mate, Robbing Hood was very popular back in the day in England.  Just as well we know history never repeats...Opps...hang on a minute...

So denying a depreciation claim then allowing a one off 20% accelerated depreciation claim. Sensible consistent policy???

In most cases it is just a pain in the ar*e, only the commercial property developers got a real long term benefit from it, although they will need to pay it back when they sell the property.

The idea of the upfront 20% accelerated depreciation claim on new assets was designed to encourage investment in new plant and equipment for NZ businesses. I guess the commercial property developers got thrown a bone with this.
