With all due respect to the author we've had ultra cheap Chinese made ICE cars for quite some time at really low prices as little as $19,990 drive away with a 10 year warranty, see  this link https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/mg/mg3/listing/4561195520 so I hardly think a $32,000 drive away pricing on a very small short range Chinese EV, (less than 200km in the real world) is going to make one iota of difference.  EV's are not free to run, you have to pay to charge them up and then there's road user charges as well so I'm not sure if people would ever recover the $12,000 price difference.  Aside from that, who wants ongoing range anxiety with less than 200 km real world EV range !  Medium sized EV's with decent range are a hell of a lot more than $32,000 !    e.g. https://www.bydauto.co.nz/vehicles/atto-3-evo  $60,000 for the base model of a pretty small / medium sized EV.

-Electric vehicle uptake in New Zealand has surged significantly through 2026, with plug-in vehicles capturing roughly 25% to 28% of new light passenger registrations by September

- China supplied 73% of New Zealand's fully electric vehicle (EV) imports in the year leading to June 2026, dominating the local market with affordable models.

- ANZ offers a 3 year 1% loan to purchase an EV up to 80k - what's the loan rate for ice cars?

- ANZ also offers a 3 year 1% loan for solar panel installation

EVs are cheaper to run as you don't need to service them as often, you can charge at home using the free 1 hour electric plans offered by electric companies or if you have solar panels you can charge using those and sell the rest of the power to the grid.

Charging an electric vehicle (EV) in New Zealand is roughly 70% to 80% cheaper per 100 kilometres than filling a traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) petrol car.
Per 100 Kilometres Cost Breakdown
• Electric Vehicle (Home Charging): Costs approximately $4.50 to $5.00 per 100 km (calculated at an average residential rate of ~$0.22/kWh with an efficiency of ~17–20 kWh per 100 km).
• Petrol Vehicle: Costs approximately $22.00 to $26.00+ per 100 km (calculated at an average petrol price around $2.94/litre with an efficiency of ~7.5 litres per 100 km).

I will probably buy a full electric car in the new year, likely Chinese, Just waiting to see what subsidy's Chloe rolls out when she becomes finance minister.  :)
