Popeye

Indeed more a test of careful thinking as opposed to brain size.

I passed the test but initially failed to understand how on earth the answer to no. 3 could be 24, until I realised it was the sample wrong answer!

Basil

LOL yeah, I saw the sample wrong answers and initially thought I must be a total dummy and its definitely time to retire.
Would be harder if you only had 1 minute to answer all 3 questions.

KW

Phew, I passed all three.  I too saw the 24 days answer out of the corner of my eye when calculating the answer and thought WTF?
Don't drink and buy shares in a downtrend, you bloody idiot.

That was fun.
Passed all 3; 1 and 3 immediately but had to press the turbo boost for no 2.

Ok brain boxes. Disclaimer. Math is not a strength of mine. ( I got the answers right and I was out on a run when I heard the questions on the radio's a bit more pressure!) But re question 3. If it doubles in size every day how did the lake get to be half full on day 47? Shouldn't this be an even numbered day? I would have thought that at day one if you start with a number (doesn't matter what it is) if you double it the next day you end up with an even number. And the day after that is another even number. So by the time the lake is half full it has to be on an even numbered day

I think you should re-think your claim :) ;

day 1 - 1m2
day 2 - 2m2
day 3 - 4m2
day 4 - 8m2
day 5 -16m2

OK - not doing that to 47, but assume its only a 32m2 pond, than at day 5 (an uneven number) it reaches half of the pond size.

that makes sense. Must have ben a very small patch of lily pad to start with. A quick calc we seem to end up with a 140,737,488,355,328sm Lilly pad by day 48

Not going to check that - not brainy enough.

Given the test was derived from MIT (not the Manukau one) the original question was probably raised in square feet.

Still seems like a biggish number though.
