Interesting. Most of us were not banned anyway.
I'm not banned either. They just locked me out of my account and deleted 12 years worth of posts. There is nothing to come back to.
Plus, most posters over there are idiots and its just a constant stream of complete rubbish. I prefer quality over quantity.
together apes strong
Is this the other forum...locked me out and won't responded to requests to access. Never again.
Was also disappeared on the other one - never known why. Certainly a lot less garbage and better behavior on this forum.
Wow, so it actually sold?:o For real money? It was one of the dumb ironies that an investment content site couldn't even turn a buck.
I think the users were lucky that Tarawera covered the costs. Indication by new owner is that it cost 4 figures a month to run. No doubt this site also has running costs that users benefit for free.
There should at least be a donations button.
I found it really shockingly high, perhaps unbelievably so. This site has been self sustaining for quite a while now from ad revenue, you may not have noticed them as logged in members are not shown ads. Hence no need for donations, your adoring, silent, accountless fans have already covered the tab 8)

What an excellent revenue generating model! Never liked lurkers lol.

I love the irony of that. Its probably about how Tahawera publishing allocated its overhead between its various publications and websites...or it could be they were paying Vince a salary for his, ahem, "professional" services.

Judging by the domain name whois record, the new owners "On This Day Pte. Ltd." are Singapore based.
This site is much better to use..... however yesterday Stocktalk was down and unusable without any explanation?
Happy to see Vince gone from the other site...... he was a terrible Admin.

Quite a bit of misinformation on the other side of the tracks
"I dont think he will. Those that chose to leave this site permanently seem quite happy at *********. I still find the user interface on sharetrader.co.nz much better than *********. Although it has improved in the last two weeks ********* had a crap load if ads recently made it unusable to me.
They probably need the money to keep the site going just like it sounds sharetrader.co.nz costs quite a bit to keep running"Poster doesnt seem to realise it was the dodgy admin that blocked users. Nor aware of the numerous outages that site has had. And only has to register here as a user to avoid ads. And a lack of financial acumen - forums take money to run.
Ha ha. They must be worried about this forum. Back to the old censorship tricks. When you have an admin editing behind the scenes who knows how trustworthy posts are.

Awww shucks that's nice. I do miss some people on the other forum but I'm an old, content and mostly retired dog now, lying in the sun on the porch with a huge stack of bones to eat and happy to stay where I am. Admin doing a great job here and I am sure we all appreciate it. Besides, there's plenty of Beagle haters in that other place and I can't be bothered with the drama.
I did think of telling Bev73 that you posted here, but you are not allowed to mention Stocktalk there..lol

Same here. Locked out for the punishable offence of trying to log in from Guangzhou in China. Repeated enquiries received no response.
The new owners let me back in last week (4 months later) but interest has disappeared and the midnight sun and the wildlife up here on the Arctic Circle has taken all of my time in that period. Nothing to miss.

Wow. Understandable what a place to be spending time at.
Nice of Rawz to ask us to 'come home'...... however it seems that to many of us after rough treatment on the other site, Stocktalk feels way more homely.
I'll be interested to see if the old site and new owners live up to their promises.
In the meantime continued healthy debate on both channels is probably the best option.

I wonder how many users that site claims to have, considering how many people they locked out of their accounts so that they only look like they are users, but who cannot access their accounts any more.

Thai John and H2SO4 live outside of NZ and have not been able to log into Sharetrader for some time.
Neither banned.
This from new owners first post
"ShareTrader, like most sites nowadays, is unfortunately under constant attack by bots, crawlers and spammers of all kinds. Today's attack included a quiet 150k requests from Brazil and another 54k from a London data center.
This forced the previous owners to restrict access to just NZ and Australia which was pretty effective but a bit of a sledgehammer. We have introduced stricter security and crawler controls while opening up the site to most countries people access it from and introduced Cloudflare managed challenges for the remaining countries in place of a hard block."

Interesting to read the above
Thinking back on my time with the old site, I suspect my sudden banning/blocking coincided with my switch to a Swiss based fully encrypted email provider. ( I had changed email provider because I was tired of Google's algorithms 'reading' my emails and bombarding me with 'targeted' spam advertising. (My change to encrypted Swiss based email site and secure search engine 'DuckDuckG0" worked, and effectively removed Google from spamming me.)
About a year after my banning/blocking Vince rang me to ask me to return to ST. He apologised for my banning/blocking and gave a long spiel about how ill health and dated software had plagued him for over a year, (he also blamed lack of investment by Tarawera) and promised to change the ST settings to allow me to rejoin ST. However it never occurred and I now suspect Vince was defeated by his own software blocking 'foreign email'.
To check this theory I recently got a friend (who uses the same secure Swiss email provider,) to try and join Share Trader....... the result was mixed. He is able to log in..... but is unable to post on ST (blocked by a message saying he doesn't have the correct 'permissions'. )
Clearly Vince and the new owners are still struggling with the dated software of the ST forum.
The new owner may have bought a lemon. That forum appears to be running vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 which was released in May 2017. It is past end of life.
perhaps we should be kind and welcome people to a more modern home.

How many people have been prevented from joining because they do not have a non-anonymous email address? I dont. I have Gmail and thats it. I dont have an employer, and thus I dont have a "work" address. People who are retired won't have work addresses, and I would have thought those would be many of the people who are interested in investing. Always seemed like a self-defeating rule to me.

Given my experience i would strongly recommend no one give those details to that site.

Even ISP account addresses have gone the way of the dodo. If you want to verify someone's identity, use a phone number. Then there is no name, no address, no work premise to stalk (and you can block a phone number from stalker admins). Anyone who wants to track you down for legal purposes can obtain a search warrant for telecom account records through the courts.

Not really that odd Mini, for example you'll be familiar with HC automatically corrupting links to all sorts of other websites. If you owned this website or ST, would you want members promoting or even referring to your competitors?

I'm kinda free speech absolutist. Its one thing having a rule and another censoring.
Any owner should have sufficient confidence in their product that they can stand in the face of competition.

That seems pretty innocuous, but using the actual website address as a link might elicit a different response. Either way, if I owned Sharetalk or ST I'd censor out any references to the competition, regardless of how confident I was in my 'product'.

feel free to discuss other platforms, this site isn't a gold mine nor much of a time sink. It exists for you, not for itself.
As a November 2024 addition to stocktalk I had initially looked to also register with the other site, but found the verification process there cumbersome to say the least and only last few days are reassured that the identity validation rig-moral wasn't actually as a result of the site having been hacked.
Today I am happy not to consider to engage there, find half the posts are more about ego clashes / contra money personalities of posters and sometimes takes a few pages of scrolling to comprehend what many of the posts are trying to say.

Good commments
Ive become much more about the stocks we already hold than looking around for others to buy, but still appreciate being able to read comments and get updates on the market
Don't see many comments from winner here and do miss the banter between all of the participants. That said there were some awfully one-sided pretentious members on ST for a while that probably caused the angst

Everyone should keep in mind we only get out of this what we put into it. If people post rubbish as happens on ShareTrader then of course it turns to custard. It's a much better attitude here from admin & posters....so long may this continue! No way will I share equivalent content on ShareTrader as I do here. Too many loud mouths there who contribute nothing of value or interest.
