Title: Black Monday
Post by: Shareguy on Aug 03, 2024, 08:43 AM
Dow closes down 600 points, Nasdaq enters correction after weak jobs report: Might be time to sit back and watch. Then again might be time to buy. Next week should be interesting.

Pretty sure RB's will fall now over each other in order to reduce interest rates.
But yes, whether the rush starts in earnest already this month (I think too late for Fed, unless they have a special meeting) or just the next, this is now the question ...

Crypto just had its black Monday moment

"In the past 24 hours, 1,640,383 traders were liquidated for a total of $19.21B!"    It went so fast that even stop losses couldn't be triggered quickly enough.  So couple of million people no going to be selling of other assets to stay afloat..."

Looks like someone had insider knowledge and shorted bitcoin right before trump tweet

I personally don't know much about / understand crypto, but I see the bitcoin price has been going back up.

I'm no expert either.  I think Donny Felon is one of the biggest holders of bitcoin in the US now.

Flash crash - blew right through stop loss targets (no one buying)

sounds like a few crypto bros committed suicide after losing million - not good.

OK - Warren does not predict the weekday the market may fall (i.e. Monday might be wrong), but his assessment of the US market sounds worrying, and many of his indicators soound really worrying ...

The only question is when will it come?

Its a bit of a ponzi scheme at the moment in US markets for sure - lots of uncertainty.

No one knows what's going to happen.  Trump likely props up the market starting near year/Q2 to get it rocking prior to mid term elections.

I am hoping we see a shift from tech/Cypto to commodities - a few punters predicting that.

I will post a couple pods in the poddy section

Anyone else adding to their cash position?

Markets look to be rolling over - S&P500 dropping below key moving averages.  Not good.

No, as always, this will blow over - when - I'm not sure.  But timing the market is near impossible.

Yes, as always it will blow over.  Unlike previous corrections I plan on having some dry powder available for the bargain bin.  Not a complete purge but I am taking some profits off the table.

The biggest oil disruption in history.  Covid vibe at work - meetings with contractors, companies pulling back to 80% production, govt 4 levels for fuel mgmt.

"Stan Weinstein defined Stage 4 as the phase where institutions are no longer supporting price. They are exiting. Quietly at first. Then all at once."

An example of how the current situation is affecting NZ the forestry industry.

Logs are exported by ship.  A portion of those logs are put on ships that come to NZ full of fertilizer - they come thru the straight of Hormuz to NZ where they unload the fert and fill up with logs destined for India.  So those ships are drying up.  Logs are still exported to China - but prices will drop without an Indian market.  Also the rise in fuel price makes shipping those logs more expensive.  This is really hard on South Island companies as the distance is farther.  So there are increased costs for harvesting, log cartage and the export ships.
Some people will say yah! forestry is hurting but there is a big spin off effect on the community.
