Well, last time it took a full blown World War before the West realised that an investment into democracy might be a good idea. Do we think people got wiser since than?
On the other hand - the US started to "export democracy" after WWII. Looks like they haven't got a lot of it left anymore - this might contribute to the problem?

I guess no matter how realistic Zelensky might be (or not) - if he goes, it would not change the dilemma.
The problem is that any negotiation with Russia is futile. The Russians did prove time and again that they don't care about their agreements. They actually did guarantee Ukraines territorial integrity when Ukraine gave up the nuclear weapons, and look what they did afterwards.
Negotiating with Russia is a waste of time and paper. Ukraine and the West either need to destroy Russia or we will need to live with the consequences, i.e. Russia increasing its territory whenever they feel the desire - not different to what Hitler did when the West was trying to appease him.
Russia is run by liars and war criminals. To allow them to win in Ukraine will come with a very expensive price tag for all of us. Given that the West lost interest in supporting Ukraine, we will pay the price and bear the consequences, and our children will still pay for our cowardice and desire to display convenient pragmatism.
We still mourn our forebears who died in WWI in Gallipoli (thanks to some idiotic British general). We mourn the millions who died in WWII not just in the trenches in Western Europe and the SEA jungle. We probably should start to prepare another national day of mourning to remember the people who will be killed in WW III which we are causing because its too dear and invonvenient for us to support the Ukraine in their struggle against the Russian monster.

Not just drones and shellfire but EW (Electronic Warfare) is very much a major player and equally important.
Russia has built it's extensive EW capabilities across the whole front and is blocking or disrupting the GPS that weapons such as Himars rely on, cutting the links to drones and jamming radar and radio links. It's got to the stage where units in the front line are carrying spectrum analyzers to find unblocked frequencies for controlling their drones. And if they find a clear frequency it's quite likely that the Russians will be monitoring and DFing it allowing them to track operators position down to a meter, with potentially unpleasant results.
Of course the Ukrainians are also using EW but, unfortunately, the Russians have much more and much better equipment. The West isn't keen on sharing and supplying their latest and greatest EW systems as you can understand which is forcing Ukraine to try to develop their own. Very difficult for them to keep up.

True, but all these fleets would need to sail through the Bosporus which happens to be controlled by the (cough-cough) Nato country Turkey. I think there a is a rule that war waging countries are not allowed to go with their warships through there.

Not sure funds are the biggest issue - hey, Europe (generating something like 15% of the worlds GDP - and if we include the UK its more than 20%) should be able to provide more funds than Russia which has roughly the economic power of Northern Italy ...

No doubt the world today is a black powder keg with too many people running around close to the keg with open flames and torches.
Not even sure, whether the speculation about whether it will be Putin, Xi, the Ayatollahs, a hard right Israel or the Dear Leader who will bring the powder keg to explosion will bring a lot of benefits. Somebody will, this is all which counts - and the West is lamed by a bunch of braindead populists who will (as they did in WWII) make sure we allow the explosion to happen and only send the firefighters when the big carnage is already done.
More interesting about who triggers the explosion would be a discussion whether there is a way to extinguish the flames and defuse the powder keg before it explodes.
If there is a way to prevent this, then it doesn't looks like we are currently very effective in going it, but at least we should start thinking about how to best survive the explosion (i.e. a rather likely nuclear WW III) and how to create afterwards a world order which stops repeating the same mistakes again and again.
But hey - humans never managed to achieve that before, why should they now? The cycle of history just stands on winter ... and after plenty of killings and suffering no doubt the wheel will turn forward to spring, summer, autumn and then - shudder - the next winter. Good thing is, while we have to live through this winter, we won't see the next - this will be the challenge for generations to come.
So - better prepare for the war - maybe we should buy our navy another inflatable and supply our army with some stones and sticks to throw?

Actually - I am still wondering whether this exchange of shells (meat grinder) is really the best strategy. Didn't really work in WW1, didn't it? In my view they need to bring the war to Russia - and do it clever. Just bomb any Russian bridge which is used to re-supply the Russian attackers ... and return the Russian favour by bombing any Russian power stations and dams they can get hold off.
The Russians are happily bombing Ukrainian hospitals, infrastructure and power stations. Now - I don't suggest to go so low to bomb Russian hospitals in return, but for sure - infrastructure and powerstations would be fair game, wouldn't they? Putin said it is ok to bomb fascists - and given that he is the biggest of all ... we should just trust his advice.
Just give the ugly bear something useful to do: Rebuild their own infrastructure instead of attacking their neighbors ...

It's really not looking good and now and the West, or at least France, is panicking. Putin knows the West will not supply front line troops and that Kiev will eventually fall. Maybe not this month or even this year but fall it will.

I guess the answer is easy - the West can either re-play the pacifying game, as it did in WW II. The result at that stage (after allowing Hitler to "re-unify" with Austria, take Czechia (hey, he will stop when he took that, won't he?), take half of Poland (hey, he will stop when he took that, won't he?), take parts of France ... was the largest and deadliest war the world has seen so far (WW II - 1939 to 1945).
If we do that we will in a handful of years have to wage WW III against Putin, Xi and a handful of Wannabe tyrants and autocrats (like the dear leader of North Korea and the ayatollahs in Iran) if we allow them to get stronger and stronger.
Obviously - we could as well stop this madness now, but this would require leadership and some inconvenience now, instead of a bloodbath later. Better avoid inconvenience, shall we? This is who we are.
Populism and the desire not to inconvenience its people is what stopped the US in 1938/9 reacting to Hitlers moves in Europe - hey, so far away, why should we care. They happily waited for Pearl Harbour (in 1941) before they started to do something about the problem.

A few interesting happenings...Russia using a lot more glide bombs (including the new guided type) against front line positions, however this is bringing their SU's closer to danger. In response Ukraine has pulled patriots or other long range anti aircraft missile systems forward and is bringing several down.
Ukraine also, sensibly, is spending more on defensive set ups to counter potential Russian aggression expected in the fairly near future.
New Russian commander seems more clued up than the last and in their latest push is using a 4 pronged mutually supporting attack rather than the single unsupported movements favoured previously.
Uke's lost some Pat launchers that were travelling in day time. That Pat system in the east close to the front line lost 2 as a drone found it and the Ugle bear sent a big missle.
Thats the end of the expensive system close to the front lines...
Without it the eastern front is now exposed again if UKE cant find some old 200's to move forward from old museums...

Hmm - there are normally eight launchers to every battery, i.e. 2 launchers doesn't sound that bad ... unless its their last two :);
But admittedly - moving them in broad daylight close to enemy lines appears to be either pretty desperate or pretty stupid.
In the good old times (when this system was developed) the troops used to be pretty neurotic about being able to completely conceal the system. But hey, who needs (untraceable) glas fibre communication between the system knots if we parade the system in broad daylight for anybody to see.

Good question. Not sure though the Bundeswehr is currently battle ready (well, it isn't), but yes, there is a historic example of ramping them up within something like 5 years. Whether this works in a democracy as well depends just on political will and the motivation of the people, I suppose. Some more adventures from the current Russian strongman might well help to speed that up.

I think the problem is that UKE would need German soldiers to program the Taurus ... which the cornered rat in Moscow might see an opportunity for further escalation. It appears that Scholz for some reason does not really wants to be seen as starting WW III.

From a military point of view, you well might be right.
From a political point of view I suppose the jury is still out.
From a humanitarian point of view it certainly would be undesirable if you are right, and
from a historical point of view we well might talk about the straw which ended the phase between world wars, which is good for the arms industry, but not very good for anybody else!
Just think about the possible end game. The most likely scenarios I can see if Israel is attacking Iran in earnest are either
- significantly increased terror all over the globe (and this won't go away anytime soon)
- another failed state in a strategic important position with militias attacking each other and anybody around (a la Sudan and Yemen)
- the end of the current racist alt right wing Israeli regime (which might not be the worst outcome I could think about)
- the end of the state of Israel (which would be undesirable)
Whatever it is - how would you see the region finding peace? Have a look into the bible (a quite interesting historical book): People in this region are killing each other with gods help on a regular basis over the last 4 millennia or so. Possible (re peace talks soon) ... and looking at the duration of the overall war - that's a function of Putlers desire (he wants to fight until all of Uke belongs to him) and the willingness of the West to properly support Uke (West likes to sit on the loo, but is doing its business only in small instalments).
With proper Western support the war never would have started in earnest - and even now, it could be finished within months.
If support stays on current level, than yes - 30 years are a guess as good as any. The real question is when Putler's Soviet Union will falter? Remember - they did before - even without the need of running an expensive war as they do these days.

And I guess in this case its easy to come up with 50k years of war for the human race (well, since the last big invasion of homo sapiens from central Africa who invaded into all other regions and killed and / or inbred (not minding consent) with whatever other homo species have been around. No difficult to circumvent sanctions - various countries of the previous eastern block are happy to offer their services. Sell e.g. anything to Georgia, Azerbaijan or Kazakhstan (which is all completely legal) and for some strange reason lots of goods find from there their way into Russia.

(Geostationary) satellite component of telecoms is these days basically Zero. Remember the times when we had a roughly 1 s delay in oversea calls? Every hop up and down adds roughly 0.2 s, and you often needed 2 satellites per leg. A nuisance for speech but a killer for data and internet.
Starlink is better in that regard (given that the satellites are much lower), but not really in common use (apart from some conflict zones). Might be however able to take over some load when pushed.
So, yes - cutting several of these cables (like to Australia and to the US) would be a killer, though a bit more difficult to do than in the Baltic Sea. Baltic sea is basically a flooded paddock with water depths of some 10m, cables are easy to find and destroy, while NZ is surrounded by real Oceans (several hundred meters on the "continental shelf" going down to several thousands of meters). As well - significantly less ship traffic overall and no through traffic - i.e. anybody trying to identify and destroy the cable would need deep sea diving equipment and stand out like a sore thumb.

I am sure military budgets will rise - all around the world. Investing into the so called defense industry feels currently like shooting fish in a barrel, though I do see the risk of investing into outdated technologies.
The thing is - I am not so sure super expensive tanks, fighters and rocketsystems will win the next war. It might be just an investment into sandals (to keep the IS fighters going), garlic and cube sugar for the Russians and wheel chairs for the Chinese to bring their old and dilapidated to the front while their deep seek is destroying the hyperexpensive AI systems of our oligarchs.
But yes, all the warriors will need cheap drones, plenty of caskets and plenty of ammunition and cheap landmines to help filling the caskets.

Yes, but at the time they trained me in the late 70íes in operating the Gepard it had still a mechanical calculator (to make it EMP-prove) - and nevertheless a roughly 98% chance to hit a low flying hypersonic jet.
No attack drones at that stage ... but I am sure a slow flying drone is easier to hit than an approaching fighter jet with Mach 2 or 3. No need for AI to get them out of the sky.
Great to know that second hand GP's anti aircraft tanks are going to be in great demand and that will make up for dropping sales of MERC's...

Uke likes them for sure - and so much cheaper per round than any other specialized and accurate air defense system. While Patriot (Iron dome) is better against rockets, it is highly uneconomical to use against cheap drones.

Time for NZ to join the race? At least we would start from really low levels (which might make the possible percentage gains look really flash). It sounds like our artillery ammo (105 mm shells, the only caliber we can use) was recently down to something like 50 rounds - for all of NZ. This would not go far in any conflict ... I hear Russia is using 24,000 per day.
Increase the 50 shells in storage to 100 shells, then its still a pittance but we raised our storage already by 100%.

Not sure, though US would need to leave Nato. Nato did cope with unreliable allies before, and they could just create a parallel European defense treaty. Issue solved.
Yes, mid terms might be interesting, though not sure, whether US will be able to run next year still free and democratic elections.
