Title: Australia “The lucky country or something else”
Post by: Shareguy on Apr 24, 2023, 07:47 AM
Watching the AM show and listening to talkback you would get the impression that "can the last person leaving turn the lights out please".

I guess the immigration tap has been turned on here, so will it be much of an issue. We will be losing Kiwis as we have always done and replacing with future Kiwis. Many of these future kiwis will be earning more than they did in their home country and will hopefully stay.

We have met plenty of people who were very open that said they could not get into Australia and came to NZ to get Citizenship and then we're off to Australia.

This latest citizenship announcement will no doubt lead to more kiwis making the move. Will it be a stampede or a constant trickle.

NZ needs to increase productivity to get these higher wages. We need to up our game and pay people fairly for the work they do.

It's "not fair dinkum" how kiwis have been treated as second class citizens for so long considering our history and close ties.  Yet this strategic move in my opinion will be Detrimental for New Zealand.

Diversity is good - and the EU is an excellent example to demonstrate that freedom of movement is beneficial to peoples lives everywhere as well as to everybody's economies.

UK (after BREXIT) demonstrates clearly the drawbacks of locking up your own people at home and keeping the people who want to come out. First step towards North Korea. Any isolation by forcing people in and keeping others out just leads just to a concentration of negative vibes in one place.

I think Australia's move is excellent - and both Australia as well as NZ will gain (as long as NZ gets rid of the xenophobe streaks in its governing party). Always better if people can operate in a place where they want to be!

Time to get the Champaign out!

Interesting comparison between UK/EU and A/NZ.

Im inclined to think that free movement came about in the EU as a trajectory of economic- political-demographic integration.

If A/NZ move toward demographic integration, will it (eventually) lead to political and economic integration?

Not sure it would be an inevitable next step, but still good question:

I guess given that AU and NZ have anyway very similar historical roots and the same culture, I would not see why not ... It surely must be possible to settle the Pavlova war and live with slightly different accents :);

The biggest problem might be to to integrate Adetingiti, Aghu wititit, Alawa and Yumplatok with Te Reo. Hope our children don't need to learn them all ...

Wouldn't it be lovely if we could "return to sender" all the 501's !

I vote for "the lucky country".  So so tempting given the borked "number 8 wire" mentality we have here.  The logistical issues of 100 years ago no longer exist so just bloody well do it right first time instead of a patch job.  It is so frustrating to observe repeated cycles of sloppy work and we never learn.  Incompetence abounds.  I turned down a job there some years ago to not be a second class citizen - I would like to see more details on what is now on offer.
