Title: Co-ownership of a Boat

Interesting article, paywalled.  Good concept.  Very early days for the Beagles, but at this stage it seems to be working well.   Certainly, the whole walk on walk off thing is really awesome.  No more cleaning and organizing all the maintenance and at this time of year begging marine engineers to fix your boat quickly.

A bit of a tangent to the thread but it highlights the necessity of life jackets being worn.  It astounds me to see the cavalier attitude of so many boaties to wearing this basic safety device.

I'd also sheet the appalling drowning stats back to the closure of school swimming pools for health and safety reasons ( insert face palm emoji here ) - having some basic swimming and water safety skills seems like an important life lesson to me....

I could not agree more!  In an island nation you'd think that learning to swim would be some kinda priority.  Swimming and the consumption of lunch were the highlights of my school days.

Over 165 school pools have been closed in the 5 years to 2018.  Probably can double that to 2022.

But its not just kids.  With 28% of the NZ population (plus tourists) now having been born outside of NZ they are coming from countries where they do not have access to swimming pools, and do not have experience with oceans/lakes/rivers etc.  So maybe adult education should also be compulsory.

But maybe the Labour/Greens will simply decide to build giant fences around lakes, and ban going in the water past your knees.  That seems to be their approach to road safety.

Step 1 - I reject that premise

Step 2 - I absolutely refute that

Step 3 - commission some highly paid specialist advice on taniwha habitats

Step 4 - slip a clause in some 130 page end of year bill making drowning illegal. Problem solved.

Alternatively, now that oceans are included in 5 Waters, the $100,000 fee you will have to pay to the Maori Governance Committee to be allowed to have a swimming permit will solve the problem

We taught our kids to swim by ourselves (and I mean properly - breast stroke - i.e. they all can swim for hours without rest (obviously if the water temperature allows for that).

Why would anybody need a swimming school to teach their children to swim?

Got the paddleboards out for the first time that come with the new puppy yesterday.  Noticed one of the boards was labelled "The Beast"  Might even have a chance of keeping a very overweight Beagle afloat lol...we'll see when the water gets a bit warmer.
Daughter, granddaughter and their friends all had more fun than a cartload of monkey's at the circus.
Cranked up the BBQ - was a super happy day....just what the doctor ordered after a VERY tough year.

Mean. Nothing like the gift of good parenting!  Sadly some parents can't swim themselves (thus making the teaching thereof difficult) or they are too lazy and / or stupid.  I guess that's why schools have to teach math, writing and reading too. None of those are inherently difficult to teach either.

Good onya Beagle. Great you can share the on water experience with the young ones. Weather looks pretty good for a few more days. Think you said your at waiheke so youll be tucked out of the sou'wester but she's going easterly so make sure you move the good ship early to secure prime position on the other side.

Happy new year and cheers for all your thought provoking posts. Appreciate the sharing of knowledge and experience.

Glad you can enjoy life.

Sure ... though teaching your kids to swim is a fun activity and ideally performed during family holidays (or leisure days at the beach), while teaching them maths ... may or may not be fun at occasions like that. Teaching them to swim will take a handful of days, while teaching them maths will take years (and many will never properly learn it).

Not sure your comparison compiles. But anyway, given that all of this has little to do with sinking money into boats ... I shall leave you with it :) :
