Title: Truckometer and Economy
Post by: Raven on Aug 25, 2022, 06:14 PM
Not sure where to put this, but thought it might be of interest to people here. An indicator of general economy, and perhaps MFT, FRE and some others.

Interesting concept and thanks for sharing.  How far back can you go with the truck data?  The reason I ask is I think it would be good to test the  strength of the quarterly relationship mathematically, using a larger sample.

Grim, eh.

If the focus is on a 50 basis point reduction and the impact on the NZX, then it's interesting to see which stocks showed the most immediate benefit from the previous OCR cut (25 point reduction to 3.00% back in late August.)

The overall NZX50 index was up 1.3% on the day of the cut and 2.6% over the five days following. No surprise that the general market sentiment was positive.  The sectors with the best gains were: logistics (Move), healthcare (Promisia, FPH, Radius), property (Winton, Oceania) and utilities/infrastructure (Contact, Mercury, Spark.)

For the potential October rates cut play, I've gone for FPH, Argosy and Spark.  "History Doesn't Repeat Itself, but It Often Rhymes" – Mark Twain.
