(Geostationary) satellite component of telecoms is these days basically Zero. Remember the times when we had a roughly 1 s delay in oversea calls? Every hop up and down adds roughly 0.2 s, and you often needed 2 satellites per leg. A nuisance for speech but a killer for data and internet.

Starlink is better in that regard (given that the satellites are much lower), but not really in common use (apart from some conflict zones). Might be however able to take over some load when pushed.

So, yes - cutting several of these cables (like to Australia and to the US) would be a killer, though a bit more difficult to do than in the Baltic Sea. Baltic sea is basically a flooded paddock with water depths of some 10m, cables are easy to find and destroy, while NZ is surrounded by real Oceans (several hundred meters on the "continental shelf" going down to several thousands of meters). As well - significantly less ship traffic overall and no through traffic - i.e. anybody trying to identify and destroy the cable would need deep sea diving equipment and stand out like a sore thumb.

No doubt. Its just - how many specialist submarines to operate in these depths are there overall? Not sure its more than people have finger on their hands, and to the best of my knowledge all in Western hands.

Admittedly - this does not mean a lot these days. Maybe just another trump for Trump to blackmail us. Who knows, we might be just the next domino stone after Canada, Greenland and Panama has been fallen to expand Trumps MAGA empire?
