Sky is a jack-of-all-trades offering movies, shows, news and sport across multiple platforms, plus they are trying to diversify into broadband and possibly mobile. For some people, particularly those wanting sport,  the one stop shop is better than having 2, 3 or even 4 streaming services that just offer movies and shows (with a lot of overlap) and nothing else. Netflix is now $17 per month in HD, so multiple services is going to add up.
Sky have a good niche and it is now profitable and cash-flow positive with no debt and plenty of funds left even after a special dividend/ buyback. Its EPS is over 20c so they could easily return to regular dividends and build up a war-chest to continue to retain/expand content.

That's the good stuff. The main problem, as pointed out, is scale. They are small fish in a global pond and if the big players move in they won't be able to compete. And they don't have a Board that is nimble or astute enough to negotiate the minefield. The cleanest and safest route is to sell to the bigger players and/or merge with a good telco and continue to diversify whilst reducing costs (which they have been doing quite well). I'd much prefer a clean-break but I'm not hopeful of this Board being able to attract a good offer in excess of $3.50 per share.
Failing all of that then continue to execute a strategy that prior to the MW fiasco and financial downturn was getting close to $3 on it's own. Oh, and sack Pooman, the awol Chairman of the Board.

SKY don't have a niche.......the big players moved in a quietly a few moths ago, my new TV yearly subscription cost $170 USD and I get 1000 channels, all New Zealand sports is covered, movies galore, TV shows galore, doco's galore.....makes SKY look like the dog it is.......only difference is it's not a satellite feed rather a broadband feed and you need unlimited data to get the best of it....most people I know have unlimited data plans.
never buy or sell shares driven by emotion, show conviction to your purchases

Ok, don't be shy - tell us who provides this amazing deal, is it "legal" , VPN required, etc

yep, let's get this thing off to a good start.

FYI - I got banned, forever, simply for criticising Sharetraders appalling inability to recover their website and not to post anything (not even now that its back) by way of explanation or apology.

Old mate

Wow that's crazy LL. Is this a new site?

Hope your SKT holiday was good & restful..

Now to encourage the SKT Board to engage on doing the right thing ;)

Who's this Ogg person?

Haha .. Oops, apologies  - mistaken identity obviously

I think SKT may have borrowed one of the 2 'T's as Mr Google suggests :)

Best borrow it back before the SKT board decide to sell the outfit :)

According to Sky's last announcement...they have been working on a capital return plan in parallel to trying to waste money on buying MW.

So they should have their 'Plan B' ready to go.

Yet it has been over a week and no announcement about a buyback or tax free payment.

Given the recent fiasco, if I were SM and the Board I couldn't get cash into shareholders hands fast enough!

Best case scenario someone is still looking to buy Sky and hence the lack of announcement on capital return.

Cod

Well they did say they were looking at all options MT, one stupid option down thankfully, an infinite number of other options to go.

LoungeLizard

Yep, it's getting a bit tiresome with SKY's mantra of keeping all options on the table, being open to offers etc. For God's sake, pick one already. Preferably one that enhances shareholder value rather than exploring terrible options that do the opposite.
The Board seem to still have that bunker mentality that worries me. They don't seem to learn that the market doesn't like surprises. If you have a strategy then stick to it. If you think it needs changing communicate it to shareholders and gauge the response. Simple really.

Plata

Agreed, getting pretty hard to hold on at this point. Doesn't really feel like the board is on our team.

New profile to remove the stink/shame of spelling The Oracle's name wrong?

I bet most of us are still praying for a Trading Halt of SKT each morning...
